THE LEGENDARY PINK DOTS NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2011

No doubt about it , Europe felt like a wounded continent as we sped along the highways ,watched karaoke on the ferries and played for our suppers on the last tour. However , there was plenty of elation too as the band just felt so damn good onstage night after night. Still it all feels like a voyage of discovery ,and after 30 years that’s golden.
Keep your eyes peeled as we may well be in your neighborhood soon.

Having said that, now is the time for recording and the first notes have been plucked or prodded in anger or joy for the next Pink Dots’ album which we guess will be there in late 2012.

2012 – FEAR NOT MY LOVELIES

LPDs plan a small tour which we hope will take in Italy , Switzerland and South Germany in April. Russia is also on the calendar for the Fall.
For a fully fledged LPDs tour of the USA and Canada ,the target is Spring 2013.
However EK and The Silverman may well make an appearance as part of a package with the wonderful Orbit Service and Dead Voices on Air in denver and perhaps a couple of other cities in May 2012.

THAT WHICH IS IMMINENT

Firstly ,something seriously ambitious …

EDWARD KA-SPEL – A Pleasure Cruise through 9 Dimensions

Beta-Lactam Ring release this new EK salvo which lives up to it’s name in almost every possible format (even 8-track cartridge). However , pride of place goes to the vinyl edition with an astonishing handmade gimmix cover. It is hyper-limited and costs 45 euros (plus postage) as a pre-order from us.It’s slated for mid-December
but considering the ambition of the package , it’s best to count on an early New year release.

EDWARD KA-SPEL -A Pleasure Cruise through 9 Dimensions….ltd CD version- 20 euros (plus postage)

Other formats? Available from www.blrrecords.com

EDWARD KA-SPEL- The Patriot / last man Standing 7″ single (vinyl)

A mere 8 copies of the original Dream cell double vinyl are still available at 25 euros (plus postage). Anyone ordering this will receive the CDR bonus disc free.

EDWARD KA-SPEL – 11.11.11.11 (CDR)

Recorded between 11th and 14th November 2011 , and fittingly includes a new version of “Poppy Day” plus songs and pieces directly related to this occasion.
In production now – expect early January..PRE-ORDER: 13,50 euros

THE LEGENDARY PINK DOTS- Atomic Roses (vinyl)

A cornerstone in LPDs history , this release is available on vinyl for the first time (timely as all other formats disappeared a while back). An edition of 300 only on Beta Lactam Ring records. possible. It costs 20 euros plus postage.

Legendary Pink Dots heading for the West Coast

Monday, November 15th, 2010

The The Legendary Pink Dots head to the West coast now for the final leg of what has been a very exciting tour so far… I mean, the last couple of weeks have been insane! Halloween with the Dresden Dolls, and live in-studio performance at WFMU both come to mind… I wonder what madness is in store for the West Coast?

Unlike most acts of their vintage, The Legendary Pink Dots look forward. After more than 25 years, they continue to make compelling new music that is demanded by fans and maintains the high level of quality that set their careers in motion. Led by singer/songwriter Edward Ka-Spel and keyboardist/songwriter Phil “Silverman” Knight, the band continues to create their singular brand of modern psychedelia. Edward Ka-Spel’s lyrics breathe with a sagacity and cleverness only found in rock’s greatest writers. Their new album “Seconds Late For The Brighton Line” finds the band in familiar territory; pulsing Krautrock, dark and sinister pop and epic post-industrial soundscapes. The album invites the listener to put on head phones, close their eyes and embark on a technicolor journey. Stand out tracks include the epic electronic groove of “Russian Roulette”, the pretty naivete of “Someday” and the chilling goth-pop of “Endless Time.” The recent departure of long-time band members Niels Van Hoorn & Martijn De Kleer has left The Legendary Pink Dots to operate as a quartet. The new crew will embark on an extensive North American tour this Fall that celebrates the band’s 30th Anniversary.

Legendary Pink Dots (official site)
Seconds Late for the Brighton Line
Label Site: ROIR (say ROAR!)
RUSCD/LP 8317

Press:

Pitchfork says: “…they traffic in horror and gothic darkness, but they do it with elegance, more slowly crescendoing George Romero dread than Wes Craven splatterfest.”

Arthur Magazine says: “It’s ominous, sinister pop… crushed velvet, light rain, spooky carnivals…”

SPIN Magazine says: “Fancy a break from the norm? These U.K. psychedelic rockers mix LSD whimsy & industrial gloom.

Time Out New York says: “…they’ve earned the legendary by now”

LA Weekly says: “The ‘Pink Dots are the latest, greatest thing – always will be – ‘cause one can never pinpoint exactly what they’re on about but can suffer measureless revelation upon hearing it.”

Seattle Weekly Says: “Softly psychedelic like a dreamer with blurry vision, and manically poppy as in the old days of the Flaming Lips.”

Popmatters Says: Pop Matters says: “New listeners beware; the intellectual stimulator of Dots records is addictive.”

Randall Frazier / Helmet Room Recordings switching things up at The Walnut Room

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

After being a sound engineer at the Walnut Room for nearly five years and the head engineer for the last year, Randall Frazier jumped into the talent buyer seat last month. While he has plans to bring in different types of acts than the room has seen in the past, he’ll also be launching a Walnut Room label, as well as using the music room as a recording studio on days when there aren’t shows.

Frazier says he’s scaling back the shows a bit and plans to book shows Thursdays through Saturdays. So on the off-days, Frazier wants to turn the room into a recording studio, which would essentially involve bringing some more microphones and pre-amps and building some sound isolation booths that could be put or taken down very quickly on the stage.

While a lot of bands have taken advantage of recording live shows in the Walnut Room, one of the best sounding venues in town, Frazier plans to take it one step further with the Walnut Room Records, which will digitally distribute live recordings. Through Helmet Room Recordings, he’s been working with IRIS, a digital distribution company that has 450 retailers over 85 countries.

What this means for bands is that they can have their shows recorded and mastered by Frazier and then release it on the Walnut Room imprint. The band would split the digital royalties, but they can take home a finalized master and manufacture their own CDs.

“They just give me exclusive rights to distribute it through the digital services,” he says. “I think it’s a great idea because it’s going to show anyone who hasn’t ever been to the Walnut Room may not to realize how superior that sound system is.

“These recordings coming out all over the place are going to kind of showcase the room for what it’s really meant for,” he continues. “And at the same time, it’s also going to promote Denver bands and shows that are happening in Denver mostly on a local level. I’m recording national people, as well, if they want, but a majority of the shows are local. It’s going to be a ton of live local music being promoted through the whole world.”

The first Walnut Room Records release is from the Flashbulb Fires, a track named “The Whale,” which was taken from a stereo soundboard mix and then mastered.

Listen to that track at Westword.com

In terms of booking the room itself, Frazier says he wants to focus more on an audiophile type of audience. With that in mind, he’s begun reaching out to his contacts from around the world that he’s made through his Helmet Room label and his indie promotions firm Massive Music America, asking folks at labels like ROIR and Ohm Resistance to look him up if they have a band coming though.

A band like, say, Expo 70, the Beta-lactam Ring psychedelic outfit who’s slated to play at the Walnut Room on Wednesday, October 27. “If you’re going to go see Expo 70, that’s the place to go see it,” he says. “If you really want to feel that music, the Walnut Room is the place.”

Frazier, who recently mastered a new Legendary Pink Dots album, says he working on bringing in that band’s frontman Edward Ka-Spel to the Walnut Room this spring.

Album Credits

All keyboards, synths and devices, both ancient and modern, were used and misused, processed and tweaked, by Edward Ka-Spel and the Silverman at Studio’s Lent and Limburgia.

From lyrics strewn across every room surface, written on printing paper, backs of envelopes and train tickets, Edward added his voice. On “Someday”, Silverman also sang.

Stringed things were played by Erik Drost, who for these sessions used acoustic, electric, bass and hawaiian guitars.

As always, Raymond Steeg’s mixing and production provided the sound answers that each track needed.
