Legendary Pink Dots heading for the West Coast

Monday, November 15th, 2010

The The Legendary Pink Dots head to the West coast now for the final leg of what has been a very exciting tour so far… I mean, the last couple of weeks have been insane! Halloween with the Dresden Dolls, and live in-studio performance at WFMU both come to mind… I wonder what madness is in store for the West Coast?

Unlike most acts of their vintage, The Legendary Pink Dots look forward. After more than 25 years, they continue to make compelling new music that is demanded by fans and maintains the high level of quality that set their careers in motion. Led by singer/songwriter Edward Ka-Spel and keyboardist/songwriter Phil “Silverman” Knight, the band continues to create their singular brand of modern psychedelia. Edward Ka-Spel’s lyrics breathe with a sagacity and cleverness only found in rock’s greatest writers. Their new album “Seconds Late For The Brighton Line” finds the band in familiar territory; pulsing Krautrock, dark and sinister pop and epic post-industrial soundscapes. The album invites the listener to put on head phones, close their eyes and embark on a technicolor journey. Stand out tracks include the epic electronic groove of “Russian Roulette”, the pretty naivete of “Someday” and the chilling goth-pop of “Endless Time.” The recent departure of long-time band members Niels Van Hoorn & Martijn De Kleer has left The Legendary Pink Dots to operate as a quartet. The new crew will embark on an extensive North American tour this Fall that celebrates the band’s 30th Anniversary.

Darryl Jenifer “In Search Of Black Judas” climbs to #27 on CMJ-New World

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

About Darryl Jenifer

No one would argue that the Bad Brains is one of the most important American punk bands of all time. Their influence is deep and wide ranging: Minor Threat, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, Lil Jon, Living Colour, Matisyahu, Mos Def, 311, hundreds of hardcore bands and any young punk musician. The anchor of this dynamic, powerful, innovative and soulful foursome is bassist Darryl Jenifer.

“[Darryl]’s the musician who most influenced my playing. Though stuff I play now is in a different vein, if you listen to our hardcore tracks, I think you can hear his influence. On the knowledge tip, definitely go and see the Bad Brains every time they play. I’ve seen them like 50 times. I climb up on something where I can get a good view of Jenifer’s hands, and just jones. He’s an unbelievable bassist.”
- Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys

Not only is Darryl considered one of the pre-eminent bassist of his era, he’s also an award winning producer. Having produced two albums for famed Canadian reggae band Bedouin Soundclash, Darryl was honored with the prestigious Juno award in 2004 for his production work on “Sounding Mosaic”. He has also produced The Idlers, Stiffed, Morgan Harris, as well as tracks for Sublime, and many of the tracks for his own band the Bad Brains. Darryl maintains a studio in Woodstock, NY.

About “In Search of Black Judas”

Darryl Jenifer returns to ROIR, home to the Bad Brains’ legendary debut album, to release his solo debut.

“In Search of Black Judas” blasts off with hardcore riffs and monstrous grooves, delivered with classic Bad Brains fire and fury and the quickness to shift into downtempo reggae passages. It’s a heady and intoxicating mix of sounds that continues a quest for innovation and soulful vibes, anchored by Jenifer’s rock steady lines.

From the stripped down rub-a-dub of “Babylon Leave Me Alone” to the dark and ominous “Trinity Rub”, an excursion into post-punk-dub akin to PIL or The Ruts, Jenifer’s inventive bass builds a rock-steady foundation on each track. “Black Slavery Dayz Mosh” is a charging reggae groove featuring Bad Brain’s vocalist HR’s twisted and treated vocals. With intricate, spacious and detailed production “In Search of Black Judas” is an aural pleasure and long awaited addition to an already grand legacy.

Press:

Ampeg says: “Critics call Darryl Jenifer a bassist of uncanny virtuosity. His precision, speed and interplay between drums and guitar are a fundamental Bad Brains attribute.””

Verbicide Says: “Jenifer’s playing has helped define the sound of the Bad Brains and as such has also helped define the low-end we hear in hardcore punk today.”

Randall Frazier / Helmet Room Recordings switching things up at The Walnut Room

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

After being a sound engineer at the Walnut Room for nearly five years and the head engineer for the last year, Randall Frazier jumped into the talent buyer seat last month. While he has plans to bring in different types of acts than the room has seen in the past, he’ll also be launching a Walnut Room label, as well as using the music room as a recording studio on days when there aren’t shows.

Frazier says he’s scaling back the shows a bit and plans to book shows Thursdays through Saturdays. So on the off-days, Frazier wants to turn the room into a recording studio, which would essentially involve bringing some more microphones and pre-amps and building some sound isolation booths that could be put or taken down very quickly on the stage.

While a lot of bands have taken advantage of recording live shows in the Walnut Room, one of the best sounding venues in town, Frazier plans to take it one step further with the Walnut Room Records, which will digitally distribute live recordings. Through Helmet Room Recordings, he’s been working with IRIS, a digital distribution company that has 450 retailers over 85 countries.

What this means for bands is that they can have their shows recorded and mastered by Frazier and then release it on the Walnut Room imprint. The band would split the digital royalties, but they can take home a finalized master and manufacture their own CDs.

“They just give me exclusive rights to distribute it through the digital services,” he says. “I think it’s a great idea because it’s going to show anyone who hasn’t ever been to the Walnut Room may not to realize how superior that sound system is.

“These recordings coming out all over the place are going to kind of showcase the room for what it’s really meant for,” he continues. “And at the same time, it’s also going to promote Denver bands and shows that are happening in Denver mostly on a local level. I’m recording national people, as well, if they want, but a majority of the shows are local. It’s going to be a ton of live local music being promoted through the whole world.”

The first Walnut Room Records release is from the Flashbulb Fires, a track named “The Whale,” which was taken from a stereo soundboard mix and then mastered.

Listen to that track at Westword.com

In terms of booking the room itself, Frazier says he wants to focus more on an audiophile type of audience. With that in mind, he’s begun reaching out to his contacts from around the world that he’s made through his Helmet Room label and his indie promotions firm Massive Music America, asking folks at labels like ROIR and Ohm Resistance to look him up if they have a band coming though.

A band like, say, Expo 70, the Beta-lactam Ring psychedelic outfit who’s slated to play at the Walnut Room on Wednesday, October 27. “If you’re going to go see Expo 70, that’s the place to go see it,” he says. “If you really want to feel that music, the Walnut Room is the place.”

Frazier, who recently mastered a new Legendary Pink Dots album, says he working on bringing in that band’s frontman Edward Ka-Spel to the Walnut Room this spring.

Album Credits

All keyboards, synths and devices, both ancient and modern, were used and misused, processed and tweaked, by Edward Ka-Spel and the Silverman at Studio’s Lent and Limburgia.

From lyrics strewn across every room surface, written on printing paper, backs of envelopes and train tickets, Edward added his voice. On “Someday”, Silverman also sang.

Stringed things were played by Erik Drost, who for these sessions used acoustic, electric, bass and hawaiian guitars.

As always, Raymond Steeg’s mixing and production provided the sound answers that each track needed.

The first part of our 30th Anniversary was always going to be tough. So many shows were confirmed at the last moment that sometimes the band felt like it was crossing into an unknown dimension rather than simply travelling to another city.We slept on floors, in dormitories and sometimes in the middle of a 10 hour drive (though thankfully not the long suffering driver).
Despite all of that people turned out in force to watch the Dots ; performances frequently had that edge of intensity that perhaps only extreme adversity can produce. Now that brief month (which felt like a year) is over and planning is underway for part 2. More old and new songs will be in the set next Spring. The year 2010 is not simply LPDs 30th Anniversary , it will mark the beginning of a big ,brave adventure. No other way- we hope you’ll join us….

BELARUS:
We are still keen to play in Minsk, and it will happen- but in 2010.
Belarus is a country which needs a special approach when it comes to organizing concerts and we have complete faith in the energetic little agency which wants to make this show happen. We will keep you posted.

The Second part of the 30th Anniversary Tour will be in Spring 2010, while it will be concluded in the USA/Canada in the Fall next year.

THE LEGENDARY PINK DOTS/ The Maria Sessions (CDR)
Back in 1991 , every note played by the Dots was captured on a tape recorder which was literally never switched off. Some of the more inspired
improvisations were worked on and turned into songs which found their way
on the Maria dimension album.
This CDR captures the very best of those sessions and features some of the most wonderful guitar work from Bob Pistoor that you’ll ever hear.A perfect
companion release to Maria Dimension itself, this literally brought tears to our eyes when we played the finished version recently.Highly highly recommended- everything unreleased and unheard outside the Dots.
A TOQ CDR …it costs 13.50 euros plus postage. OUT NOW!

THE LEGENDARY PINK DOTS/Human Radio (CDR)
A radio broadcast in 2002 before a tiny audience in an Amsterdam cafe.
Crystal clear recordings interspersed with snippets of interview plus the material the Dots played in the cafe AFTER the radio show was finished.
Songs included are “Isis Veiled”, “Our Dominion”, “12th” ,”The More it stays the same” and a few others.A quiet beauty….This TOQ CDR costs 13.50 euros plus postage.OUT NOW

EDWARD KA-SPEL/THE SILVERMAN/ The Whispering Wail (CDR)
Fine recordings from 2004 featuring Edward and Phil improvising with ” The Whispering Wall” album in mind. It’s wild and loud and at times utterly uplifting.Again, this one comes recommended .All pieces unreleased and unheard outside Chez Dots.
A TOQ CDR..it costs 13.50 euros plus postage.OUT NOW

EDWARD KA-SPEL/The Painted River of Regrets (vinyl LP)

BEAUTIFUL THINGS THAT CAME OUR WAY

FREDERIK GROENER & TIMO VAN LUIJK-Voile au Vent (vinyl LP)
Just released- this is a record of astonishing beauty. The first side made me feel like I was tiptoeing through a magical garden at twilight, the second cast me out into a forgotten sea.Timo is an improviser of the first order- everything he creates is worthy of your attention, but if you start anywhere, then start HERE. It’s limited as well, so be fast!
It can be ordered directly from Timo at this address: tivalu@telenet.be

MAG
Watch this space for details concerning this incendiary solo girl performer from Sweden. She opened for us in Malmo and Im still scraping my jaw from
the floor after dragging it all the way back to The Netherlands. Marvellous, hugely inventive….words aren’t enough..

ES/ Sateenkaarisuudelma
Available as a beautiful double album release and as a double CD.
Quite honestly if the amount of love and devotion poured into this album was contagious (I hope it is) then we could seriously talk about the dawn of a New Age of earth. Nothing sweet here, this is music that lifts the listener to a place he or she probably hoped would exist but somehow doubted it. I had to think of the best work of Terry Riley at odd (golden) moments, but that would be a lazy comparison ultimately.
Much has been written about the “Finnish free folk” movement ,and there are an awful lot of releases out there which carry this categorization. My recommendation is to dive into the ocean with confidence…but this is a good place to start from.
SVARTBAG
I was given this CD by a kind record store owner in Copenhagen, and what a beauty it is!!! Perhaps there are echoes of the sadly missed Godspeed You Black Emperor, but that comparison does this Danish band a disservice.Very much an individual sound to this CD on the Rump Recordings label.Charged, ecstatic .Utterly uplifting in these sepia times.
THE JOHN MORAN CORPORATION
Sometimes a CD comes along that makes you want to fling open the windows and scream about to the rest of the World (only that would of course interfere with the beautiful music).
In the case of John moran, it wasn’t one but 2 albums that turned up in the mail box..Psychedelic in the braodest sense, tuneful, intelligent, happy, sad—dont know where to stop.John is fromAustralia and his CDs are on the Puzzle Factory label.Seek him out, and buy his music–you will not regret this.
UN FESTIN SAGITAL
Title: Epitafio a la Permanencia
Imagine Christian Vander and Pierre Henry collaborating on a lost masterpiece when they were both at the peaks of their powers…..Imagine the master tape turning up in Chile..Imagine it’s reputation preceded it and turned out to be EVEN BETTER……Un Festin Sagital is a group I’d never heard of before, but I reckon I’ll spend the next few years hearing them again and again such is the depth of this debut.Purchase from < www.blrrecords.com> now before it vanishes.
ARIEL KALMA
Beta-Lactam Ring has given Ariels’ first insanely rare album a long overdue re-release and it’s a glory.Lots of beautiful bonus material as well. We loved this record for years at Chez Dots…Hearing it with this kind of clarity was akin to waking up after a long Winter’s sleep.
MORE TO COME SOON!!

1. All prices are listed in Euros and USD. The Euro price is for readers in western Europe while the dollar price is for everyone outside this continent- note: we ALWAYS prefer Euros as the Dollar becomes weaker every day.Always check for availability of items before ordering by emailing:
l_khata@yahoo.com
2. . Under normal circumstances, we process orders within five working days, though CD-R orders may take longer. Trans-Atlantic deliveries usually take an average of three weeks for items that are in stock. However, since the postal service can take significantly longer than three weeks in some instances (and considerably shorter than three weeks in others!), we cannot be held accountable for fluctuations in your delivery time. If you are in a real hurry, your package can be sent by a service of your choosing such as UPS, FedEx, Overnight or Priority Mail. It is very important that you discuss delivery options and preferences with us at the time you place your order so that we can add the appropriate shipping fees to your total.
3. When placing your order, please remember that it is your responsibility to let us know if you would like your parcel sent via insured or registered mail. Keep in mind that we live in an imperfect world with an imperfect postal system. Alas, we *cannot* accept responsibility for uninsured/unregistered parcels that are lost or delayed. If you would like us to send your parcel via registered mail, we will be happy to do so, but please add 5 Euros or 6 USD to your payment.
4. Orders of 10 or more copies of the same title will qualify you for wholesale prices (much cheaper). Get back in touch with us for more details.
5. Alas, we cannot accept credit cards or cheques.

In other words, please write: 1. “All The King’s Horses” CD, 2. “Requiem Settings” CD, 3. “Tanith & The Lion Tree” CD instead of “3 CDs.” If you are sending cash, please remember to enclose a list of the items you are ordering with your payment and again, please include the shipping address.
